Evening Primroses
When was the last time you sat out in your garden with your eyes closed and took a deep breath? There is nothing better than capturing the complex layers of perfumes a garden can produce - and no better plant than the Evening Primrose.
“Come darkness they erupt into a carnival of passion where light, shape and colour become irrelevant and fragrance is everything. The flowers, like a lily, hold blooms that are rich in pollen and bombard passersby with a sweet, spicy blend of perfumes”
- Chris Beardshaw, TV gardener.
Bright bold flowers are carried on superb green foliage that is utterly hardy and fast growing. Evening Primrose is a native of well-drained soils of North- East America and is extremely easy to grow. Blooms in buttercup-yellow emerge in clusters on top of the willowy stems, which can reach 3-4ft, making them an ideal candidate for an informal barrier. Plant about 2ft apart to produce a fairly dense screen of foliage, or they can be planted in groups.

The flower arranger’s favourite, these scabious have the most unusual and fantastic colour, which just doesn’t seem to be found in many other flowers.

Colour varies from blue to mauve - a great contrast for lighter blooms.

They will form a compact bush, full of flower, from which can be cut stems for indoor vases.

They are fully winter hardy and improve year-afteryear, creating a bigger and stronger clump.
